International Council for Science : Committee on Data for Science and Technology Earth and Space Science Data InteroperabilityApproved by the CODATA 26th General Assembly, Kyiv, 2008
Renewal approved by the CODATA 27th General Assembly, Cape Town 2010 1- Objectives of the Task Group The objectives of the task group (TG) are to promote the establishment and usage of modern and open data access standards and help to develop efficient way to achieve inter-operability. The TG will promote free access to metadata exchange and integration worldwide, including goal-oriented co-operation. Concrete applications of this approach promoted by the TG are development of multi-disciplinary intelligent geographical information system (GIS) for the Globe, creation of World atlas of Earth’s magnetic field for 1500-2010 and launch of a new geomagnetic data center for the CIS countries. 2- Proposed Membership Chair:

About 150 participants from eight countries (Russia, France, USA, Iran, Germany, Slovakia, Austria, and Ukraine) attended the Conference. A wide range of eGY topics were covered by the Conference’s presentations and discussions: Electronic Geophysical Year results and prolongation, International Polar Year, International Heliophysical Year, International Year of the Planet Earth, International Year of Astronomy, GIS applications, methods of artificial intelligence in geosciences, problems of geoinformatics in seismology and geoecology, GRID systems and cloud computing, geomagnetic observations, geoinformatics and virtual observatories, transition of World Data Centers (WDCs) to World Data System, Russian-Ukrainian WDC cluster, global changes, climate and weather in the Solar-Earth system. The CODATA TG working meeting was held on the occasion of the Conference. The Conference provided close linkage between CODATA, World Data System, which is being created at the moment by International Council for Science (ICSU), and eGY. The results of the Conference and its proceedings are electronically published at http://eos.wdcb.ru/egy/. The link from the eGY web-site to this Conference web-site and the link from CODATA web-site to the Conference web-site are also activated. The Conference provided important contribution to promoting free and open access to metadata and data worldwide with special attention paid to Eastern Europe and Russia. Another important initiative launched by the efforts of the TG is creation of Russian-Ukrainian WDC cluster. In addition to significant simplifying data access for Eastern Europe countries this cluster is considered as a possible appropriate prototype for the whole new World Data System deployment. With the TG support three meetings of the board of Russian-Ukrainian WDC cluster were organized: on 26 December 2008 in Moscow, Russia, on 5 June 2009 in Pereslavl, Russia, and on 8-9 December 2009 in Kiev, Ukraine. The next meetings are planned to be held in Obninsk and Uglich, Russia, in December 2010 and January 2011 with active participation of the TG. Preliminary planning of multi-disciplinary intelligent GIS for the Globe was done in discussions among the TG members. It has been concluded that such a GIS can become a pilot for the goal-oriented co-operation in the field. Free access to metadata/data related to impact of natural calamities has been also discussed and emphasized at different meetings. Finally, the focus of the TG is promotion of modern data exchange tools and geomagnetic data exchange worldwide. In particular the TG is strongly involved in creation of World Atlas of Earth’s Magnetic Field for 1500-2010. Besides, nowadays the TG actively participates in deployment of a new geomagnetic center for the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) countries. The first meeting of the renewed TG was held at the Institute of Physics of the Earth in Paris, France, in May 2010. A series of joint meetings between Russian and American TG members was held at NOAA National Geophysical Data Center in Boulder and US Geological Survey in Golden (Colorado, USA) in October 2010. Discussions on practical issues of the TG goals and applications such as Science on the Sphere, geomagnetic data handling and processing and various geophysical data exchange provided great contribution to the TG progress. 4- Deliverables completed by the 2010 General Assembly
