Data Sources in Asian-Oceanic Countries

Objectives:
DSAO Task group has provided data experts in Asian-Oceanic countries. The Task group encourages and facilitates regional knowledge sharing and co-operating in many areas of scientific and technical data. Areas of particular emphasis are the promotion and enhancement of development of reliable databases by precept and example. The Task Group organizes meetings on management, standardization and quality control of the data.

Summary of activities since the 2004 General Assembly

(1) The 16th DSAO Task Group Conference was held in Bangkok on Jan 12-13, 2006: Natural disasters and the Asian-Oceanic avian influenza comprehensive information system.

The 16th CODATA DSAO Conference was successfully held in Bangkok during Jan.12-13, 2006. There are 31 participants from China, Japan, Korea, Thailand, India and Indonesia who have made the 17 presentations. The 16th DSAO Conference focuses on the following three topics: 1. Data activities reports from member countries, 2. Natural disasters and Biodiversity, 3. Proposal of the construction of the Asian-Oceanic avian influenza comprehensive information system.

At the meeting, Prof. Morakot Tanticharoen from Thailand expressed the warm welcome to all participants. Then Prof Yan Baoping briefly introduced the recent data activities in China, especially the SDB of CAS, and Prof Shuichi Iwata briefly introduced the Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow of CODATA, he also talked about the missions and roles of DSAO, and the participants from Korea, Thailand, India and Indonesia also introduced data activities in their country respectively. Furthermore, the participants exchanged the experience and updated achievements of the research of natural disaster and avian influenza, especially emphasized the importance and necessary of the data sharing and application in these areas.

Finally, all the participants reached an agreement to apply a task group in CODATA which focuses on the data sharing and application of avian influenza research among Asian-Oceanic countries and regions.

(2) DSAO website was established in 2004

With the help of Computer Network Information Center, CAS, the DSAO website was established in 2004. It provides an open window for DSAO task group to publish news and achievements, it also provides a cooperation platform for members.

(3)  The 15th DSAO Task Group Conference was held in Indonesia.

The 15th Workshop on the Survey of Data Sources in Asian-Oceanic Countries (DSAO) CODATA Task Group was held at the International Conference Room, with the topic for discussion : Sharing Data Resources for Research, Science and Technology in Asian-Oceanic Countries, 20-21st July,2004 in Indonesia.

Future Activities

During 2006-2008, DSAO task group will organize a survey on the scientific data resources in Asian-Oceanic countries and regions. And by 2008, DSAO task group will publish a research report on the scientific data activities in Asian-Oceanic countries and regions based on the survey.

In October, 2006, the 17th DSAO task group conference will be held in Beijing, China. At that conference, we will discuss how to start a scientific data resource survey at that meeting. After that meeting, DSAO task group will make a completed solution. At the 2008 General Assembly, DSAO task group will provide a full conference report.

DSAO will continuously to focus on the Asian-Oceanic Avian Influenza Comprehensive Information system. DSAO task group will cooperate with the relevant member countries to promote the construction of the Asian-Oceanic Avian Influenza Comprehensive Information system, in purpose to share and exchange data. By the end of 2007, DSAO will carry out an Avian Influenza Data Model, and by 2008, DSAO task group will set up a portal of the Asian-Oceanic Avian Influenza Comprehensive Information system.

The DSAO task group will organize the meeting on data sharing, data exchanging and data using by keeping up with the S&T development in the whole world. By these meetings, new cooperation among Asian-Oceanic countries and regions on special fields such as Avian Influenza and Natural Disaster will be promoted. Furthermore, DSAO task group will provide new proposals to the CODATA to set up new task groups or work groups.
