RDA’s 12th Plenary – Call for Poster Deadline Extended!

The deadline to submit poster applications for RDA’s 12thPlenary (P12) has been extended to 28 September 2018.  Don’t miss this excellent opportunity to display your work and share your research and accomplishments with an international audience.

Taking place from 5-8 November 2018 in Gaborone, Botswana, P12 will be part of as part of International Data Week 2018, which will bring together data scientists, researchers, industry leaders, entrepreneurs, policymakers and data stewards from all disciplines and geographies across the globe.

Positioned in prominent areas at the Gaborone Convention Center, poster session participants will have high visibility with meeting attendees, especially during the coffee breaks, lunches and social events. 

Notifications of acceptances will occur on 5 October 2018.

Note, if accepted, posters should be printed in vertical format with dimensions of 70cm x 100cm and must be printed and delivered to the event venue directly by applicants.

Objectives

One of the main challenges, in most fields, is to handle and process a huge amount of datacoming from a large spectrum of professional, scientific or open sources. This data, by nature heterogeneous and generated by people, systems, things (IoT) and intelligent networks, may be handled directly or transmitted by different remote operations.

This raises several technical and societal problems with respect to data coherence and quality, data privacy and protection, as well as the need to develop original techniques and powerful tools for collecting and processing large volumes of data.

In a multidisciplinary approach centred on Information and Data Science, the conference focuses on how to raise, retrieve, and build relevant datasets and knowledge from different fields to manage and optimise data evaluation and also aims at a transversal approach between different domains, techniques, processes, strategies and uses of data.

The contributions can report specific cases, generic models, constructivist and critical postures. Inter-disciplinary contributions, both in engineering or in human and social sciences are expected to discuss the paradigm of data as a source of information, knowledge, and various indicators.

Publication

Accepted articles will be published in Conference Proceedings with ISBN  by Comité Codata France in cooperation with University of Paris-Est Marne-la-Vallée and Cnam Paris.

Best papers may be published later in international specialised journals.

The ever-accelerating volume and variety of data being generated is having a huge impact on a wide variety of research disciplines, from the sciences to the humanities. The international, collective ability to create, share and analyse vast quantities of data is having a profound, transformative effect. This ‘Data Revolution’ offers great opportunities for students with modern data skills, both in conducting their research and in entering a jobs market where those skills are in demand.

Contemporary research – particularly when addressing the most significant, transdisciplinary research challenges – cannot be done effectively without a range of skills relating to data. This includes the principles and practice of Open Science and research data management and curation, the use of a range of data platforms and infrastructures, large scale analysis, statistics, visualisation and modelling techniques, software development and annotation and more. We define ‘Research Data Science’ as the ensemble of these skills.

The International School on Data Science will focus on growing competence in accessing, analyzing, visualising, and publishing data. It is open to participants from all disciplines and/or background from the sciences to humanities. This activity will cover topics on principles and practice of Open Science, research data management and curation, use of a range of research compute infrastructures, large scale analysis, statistics, visualisation and modeling techniques, automation and scripting.

There is no registration fee. Limited funds are available to support accommodation, subsistence and travel support. For financial reasons, it is likely that priority will be given to travel support for students from the Latin American and Caribbean region, except in the case of particularly exceptional students.

Applicants from any region are strongly encouraged to look for alternative sources of funding to support their participation. For the recent CODATA-RDA School of Research Data Science in Trieste a large number of students were able to support their participation with funding from a variety of sources including their institutions, various grants, charities and sponsoring organisations etc

The training provided by the CODATA-RDA School of Research Data Science is primarily targeted at Early Career Researchers (advanced masters students, doctoral candidates, post-docs and young or early career academics). The data skills taught are also useful for (data) librarians and other research support staff, such as those who envisage a career as data steward or data analysts. Furthermore, people who are more advanced in their careers who would like to improve their data skills as a form of continuing professional development are also eligible.

Applicants are expected to have a baseline of data skills and these are tested by an online form. In addition, applicants should pay particular attention to their personal statement and communicate persuasively their reasons for wishing to attend the School: how do they intend to use these skills, how will it benefit their research or the institution in which they work? Finally, candidates should take pains to ensure that their application is well supported by references from their past or present tutors or line managers. This is particularly important so that the School directors have confidence in the candidate and that the skills learnt will have the maximum benefit and impact.

Provision List of Candidates for CODATA Elections Announced

The 31st CODATA General Assembly will take place in Gaborone, Botswana, on 9-10 November after the International Data Week 2018. The GA will take place at University of Botswana, 4775 Notwane Rd, Gaborone, Botswana, at the end of International Data Week in Garorone, Botswana, delegates representing CODATA members will be able to vote for candidates for the following positions: President, Vice Presidents and 'Ordinary Members' of the Executive Committee. 

As ‘Officers’, the President and Vice Presidents are play an important leadership role within CODATA.  The President and Vice Presidents are elected for four year terms.  The CODATA Executive Committee comprises eight Ordinary Members and is elected in its entirety every two years.  Members may serve up to three two-year terms. 

Provisional List of Candidates

The Provisional List of candidates for this year’s election is now available, as is the full collection of nomination forms and candidates CVs.

We are fortunate to have a range of very strong candidates for all the positions available: two excellent presidential candidates, three candidates for the two vice-president positions and no fewer than 13 candidates for the 8 places as Ordinary Members.  However, please see the Statement from the Nominating Committee below.

The CODATA constitution allows for additional candidates to added to the list.  For this to happen, the candidates must receive the nomination of at least four CODATA members.  Additional nominations, on the requisite form, should be sent to simon@codata.org by the deadline of 28 September, 2018.

Statement from the Nominating Committee

The Nominating Committee thanks CODATA members for the nominations they have provided for candidates for election to the CODATA Executive Committee.  The nominations represent an experienced and geographically diverse set of candidates; however, the Nominating Committee is disappointed with the relatively low number of female candidates (five out of thirteen for the Ordinary Membership of the Executive Committee).
 
The CODATA Constitution allows for additional candidates to be nominated by at least four CODATA members, provided such nominations are received at least six weeks before the General Assembly. Therefore, the Nominating Committee would ask CODATA members to consider nominating additional candidates to add to the provisional list to help address the gender imbalance.

 


Public Review of DDI 3.3

  • Support for DDI as a Property Graph
  • Quality Statement improvements (useful for Eurostat reporting)
Additionally, DDI 3.3 has a formal model now, so a detailed changelog can be generated between DDI 3.2 and 3.3.

African Leaders Malaria Alliance

Joy Phumaphi, African Leaders Malaria AllianceJoy Phumaphi is the Executive Secretary of the African Leaders Malaria Alliance. She served as a member of the UNSG’s High-Level Panel on the Global Response to Health Crises and the Chair of the Global Leaders Council for Reproductive Health, as well as serving as co-Chair of the Independent Expert Review Group for Every Woman Every Child, reporting annually to the UNSG on developing country-level progress on Women’s and Children’s health. She served as Member of Parliament in Botswana, holding portfolio responsibility in the cabinet, first for Lands and Housing (1995-1999), and then for Health (1999-2003). She later joined the WHO as Assistant Director General for Family and Community Health (2003-2007). She has served as Vice President for Human Development at the World Bank (2007-2009). Joy has served on a number of commissions and expert groups and sits on the Board of several international non-profit organizations working on global health.

Ian Foster
Argonne National Laboratory

Ian Foster, Argonne National LaboratoryIan Foster is Distinguished Fellow and director of the Data Science and Learning Division at Argonne National Laboratory. He is also the Arthur Holly Compton Distinguished Service Professor of Computer Science at the University of Chicago. Ian received a BSc (Hons I) degree from the University of Canterbury, New Zealand, and a PhD from Imperial College, United Kingdom, both in computer science. His research deals with distributed, parallel, and data-intensive computing technologies, and innovative applications of those technologies to scientific problems in such domains as materials science, climate change, and biomedicine. His Globus software is widely used in national and international cyberinfrastructures. Foster is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Association for Computing Machinery, and British Computer Society. His awards include the Global Information Infrastructure Next Generation award, the British Computer Society's Lovelace Medal, the IEEE’s Kanai award, and honorary doctorates from the University of Canterbury, New Zealand, and the Mexican Center for Research and Advanced Studies of the National Polytechnic Institute (CINVESTAV). He co-founded Univa, Inc., a company established to deliver grid and cloud computing solutions, and Praedictus Climate Solutions, which combines data science and high performance computing for quantitative agricultural forecasting.

Tshilidzi Marwala
University of Johannesburg

Tshilidzi Marwala is the Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University of Johannesburg. Previously, he was the Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research and Internationalization and the Executive Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment both at the University of Johannesburg.  He progressively held the positions of Associate Professor, Full Professor, the Carl and Emily Fuchs Chair of Systems and Control Engineering as well as the SARChI Chair of Systems Engineering at the Department of Electrical and Information Engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand. Before then, he was the Executive Assistant to the technical director at South African Breweries and a post-doctoral research associate at the Imperial College (then University of London). He holds a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (magna cum laude) from Case Western Reserve University (USA) in 1995, a Master of Mechanical Engineering from the University of Pretoria in 1997 and a PhD specializing in Artificial Intelligence and Engineering from the University of Cambridge in 2000. Tshilidzi is a registered professional engineer, a Fellow of TWAS (The World Academy of Sciences), the Academy of Science of South Africa, the African Academy of Sciences and the South African Academy of Engineering. He is a Senior Member of the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineering) and a distinguished member of the ACM (Association for Computing Machinery). His research interests are multi-disciplinary and include the theory and application of artificial intelligence to engineering, computer science, finance, social science and medicine. He has supervised 47 Master’s and 28 Doctoral students to completion. He has published 13 books in artificial intelligence, one of these has been translated into Chinese, over 300 papers in journals, proceedings, book chapters and magazines and holds four patents. He is an associate editor of the International Journal of Systems Science. His writings and opinions have appeared in the magazines New Scientist, The Economist and Time Magazine.

RDA Europe continues its series of support programmes for data researchers and practitioners and is now running 2 Open Calls to facilitate participation of 7 RDA Early Career Researchers and 5 Expert RDA members to the 12th RDA Plenary meeting in Botswana.

The second edition of International Data Week  (IDW 2018) will be held on 5-8 November 2018 in Gaborone, Botswana bringing together data professionals and researchers from all disciplines and from all parts of the globe. Co-organized by the ICSU World Data System (WDS), the ICSU Committee on Data for Science and Technology (CODATA) and the Research Data Alliance (RDA), this landmark event will address the theme of ‘The Digital Frontiers of Global Science’ and will combine the 12th RDA Plenary Meeting, the biannual meeting of the research data community, and SciDataCon 2018, the scientific conference addressing the frontiers of data in research.
