At the 25th CODATA General Assembly on 26-27 October in Beijing,
the following Mission Statement was approved:

The mission of CODATA is to strengthen international science for the benefit of society by promoting improved scientific and technical data management and use.

Call for Proposals for CODATA Task Groups 2014-16 extended to 30 May
CODATA has extended the deadline for proposals for new Task Groups and to renew existing Task Groups. The new deadline is 30 May.

Task Groups are established to support CODATA's overall mission to strengthen international science for the benefit of society by promoting improved scientific and technical data management and use.

More specifically, Task Groups must remain relevant in a fast changing environment and contribute to the realisation of CODATA's strategic objectives and activities, as articulated in the CODATA Strategic Plan, 2013-18.

   Workshop on Big Data for International Scientific Programmes: Challenges and Opportunities
With a number of important partners, CODATA is convening a major Workshop on Big Data for International Scientific Programmes which will take place in Beijing on 8-9 June 2014.  For further details follow the link above to the CODATA Blog.

The workshop is designed to provide a better understanding of the opportunities and challenges of ‘Big Data’ for international collaborative science programmes, including ICSU-sponsored programmes such as Future Earth and Integrated Research on Disaster Risk (IRDR), as well as international initiatives such as the Group on Earth Observations (GEO), the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), the International Society for Digital Earth (ISDE), and initiatives sponsored by the Belmont Forum.  The results of the workshop will also help set an agenda for CODATA activities on Big Data for international science.

The workshop is co-sponsored by the ICSU World Data System (ICSU-WDS), the Research Data Alliance (RDA), the International Society for Digital Earth (ISDE) and the Institute of Remote Sensing and Digital Earth of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (RADI).

   CODATA International Training Workshop in Big Data for Science, for Researchers from Emerging and Developing Countries
CODATA, in collaboration with CODATA-China is delighted to invite applications from young researchers, research leaders and managers of research institutes in countries with emerging and developing economies to participate in the CODATA International Training Workshop in Big Data for Science, Beijing, 4-20 June 2014.  Participation for successful applicants will be financially supported, thanks to a grant from the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).  The deadline for applications is 16 April.  For further details, application instructions and the application form please follow the link above to the CODATA Blog.

   SciDataCon 2014: Call for Abstracts and Sessions released
The deadline for submission of proposals for Oral Presentations and Sessions is 25 May 2014. Conference Registration is also now open.

SciDataCon 2014 is organised in partnership with ICSU-WDS and with the Indian National Science Academy and the Indian CODATA National Committee.  It will take place in New Delhi on 2-5 November 2014.

    Nominations and elections are an important opportunity for CODATA Members and Task Groups to influence the governance and strategic direction of our organisation.
    Please consider carefully your nominees and contribute actively to this process.

   Release of Data Citation Report: "Out of Cite, Out of Mind"  
    Directed by the staff of the US CODATA/Board on Research Data and Information (BRDI) the report was published by the CODATA Data Science Journal and is available     freely and openly online at:https://www.jstage.jst.go.jp/article/dsj/12/0/12_OSOM13-043/_article.

   CODATA apppoints its new Executive Director

    CODATA is delighted to welcome Dr. Simon Hodson as its new Executive Director. He will take up his duties on August 1st 2013.
    Dr. Hodson takes over the leadership from Ms Kathleen Cass who served as Executive Director for over 10 years.

     Co-written by David Lide and Gordon Wood, CODATA @ 45 Years retraces the story of CODATA from 1966 to 2010.
     The publication was officially launched during the 23rd International CODATA Conference in Taipei.
