Databases in Material Science Research and Education

Contemporary world is full of
data that need to be found as quickly and simple as it is possible. That is why
role of databases became extremely important and students have to habituate
themselves for using it for future professional activities.
There
are global databases which are used by Metal Physics Department students intensively
during their studies and research work. For example, databases in material
«NIMS MATERIAL DATABASE» which was created by Japan Science and Technology
Agency & Material Phases Data System. «NIMS MATERIAL DATABASE» gives its
users a lot of possibilities: properties of elements and alloys, visualization
of their crystalline structure, defining diffusive coefficient for the huge
amount of systems, information on their practical application. All pure
elements and alloys, their physical and mechanical properties, electronic
structure, and phase diagrams, basic crystal structures are presented in this
database in very simple and clear form. Using advanced databases during the
studying makes educational process clearer and helps students to understand the
way how data could be collected and stored, which is very important in there
future scientific research.
On the Metal
Physics Department when learning the course “Theory of heat and mass transfer”
students study diffusive laws on the example of exact systems using «NIMS
MATERIAL DATABASE». Students also use several databases, for example “Mineral Crystal Structure Database” in the course “Computer modeling of Crystal Lattice Parameters”.
Besides using global databases
students create local databases concerning their research results which are
available for everybody in Metal Physics Department local network.
Now
the role of data and tools for fast searching and finding information has
significant influence on scientific research. That is why it is extremely
important to use existing global databases supplementing it with scientist’s
own contribution in science of data mining.
